ABOUT US
Many often wonder where the name Gehring's Tavern originated—and it's a story of beer & German Immigration. C.E. Gehring, a maternal relative of Kevin Flanigan, immigrated to the United States in 1848 from Germany where he had previously been a brewer's apprentice.
After working in several Cleveland breweries, he founded his own in 1857. The Gehring Brewing Company was one of Cleveland's most popular breweries, at one point brewing 16,000 barrels annually. As Gehring's business grew, it didn't take long before being dubbed one of Cleveland and Ohio's "Best Beers".
After the passing of C.E. Gehring in 1893, the company was absorbed by Cleveland & Sandusky Brewing Company where it continued brewing Gehring's beer until the plant closed in 1918 with the looming threat of Prohibition in the balance.
The last of the Gehring Brewing Company buildings burnt down in 1927, its location roughly where Cleveland's Forrest City Brewery currently stands. To this date, the only remnants of this important piece of Cleveland brewing history is a street that bears Carl's name—Gehring Ave—located just off W.25th near the West Side Market… and now Gehring's Tavern continues to honor that family legacy & piece of Cleveland history.
